Ewan's Movember: More than a 'tache

It’s that time of year again. Men across the nation are sprouting the strangest-looking facial hair for the noblest reason: Movember. One of these men is our very own digital marketing manager, Ewan Burkinshaw.
Here, we outline what Movember is, what Ewan’s fundraising efforts will involve and share how you can donate to this worthy cause.
Movember is the leading charity taking on the face of men’s health – from mental health and suicide prevention, to prostate and testicular cancer. In their own words, “Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.”
While the Movember movement is most associated with men sporting a dodgy-looking ‘tache, there are lots of ways to support the cause… which brings us to Ewan. As the Bigger Boat’s resident strongman, he’s choosing to move for Movember. As there were 5,583 suicides registered in England and Wales in 2021, Ewan’s initial aim was to do hill reps until he’d accumulated 1ft of ascent for each suicide (5,583ft of elevation gain), equating to just over 19 reps. However, as there are 21 crew members at The Bigger Boat, Ewan’s decided to aim even higher, aiming for 21 hill reps totalling 6.090ft. Oh – and he’ll also be wearing a 10kg weighted vest (plus a novelty moustache).
“Men’s mental health is often overlooked, but when you see those suicide statistics, it really hits home. Charities like Movember are so important not just for raising money towards men’s health causes, but for instigating those all-important conversations and eliminating the taboo surrounding issues such as mental health, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer. My goal is to raise £500 for Movember, but any money raised will help make steps in the right direction.”
